Mission Statement
SVN provides a safe, healthy, collaborative community of engaged learners who are inspired academically while fostering a supportive network for its families. Our vision as a collaborative community of learners is to be a positive, engaged member of the community and be recognized statewide as one of the top ten charter schools in academic performance.
About This Cause
WHO WE ARE: Scuola Vita Nuova (SVN) is quality K-8 public charter school located in the urban core of Kansas City, Missouri, in the heart of the old historic Northeast community since 1999. In addition, SVN is a top ten charter school in the state of Missouri, named Missouri's 2019 charter school of the year by the Missouri Charter Public School Association. SVN is proud of its diverse student population that is reflective of the community, identifying as a true neighborhood school. SVN offers a complete K-8 program, providing for the social, emotional needs of every child with an emphasis on achieving academic growth. The school has adopted the balance literacy approach to learning, involving, training, and coaching teachers to design and implement curriculum aligned to state standards. SVN embraces a “Leader in Me” program that impacts not only teachers and students but defines SVN as an outstanding leader among charter and traditional public schools in the Kansas City area. NEED: Despite SVN's accomplishments, there have been many challenges. Due to inequities in funding as compared to surrounding traditional public schools, SVN has had to "do more with less". SVN operates at maximum efficiency with many team members wearing multiple hats, devoting their lives to fulfilling SVN's mission. Your donation will help SVN provide the best possible education and bring programs to children and their families in an underserved community, in keeping with SVN's mission to provide a safe, healthy, collaborative community of engaged learners who are inspired academically while fostering a supportive network for its families. As an added bonus, SVN has received a matching grant opportunity from the Sherman Family Foundation! Through December 20, 2021, your contribution will have double the impact as the Foundation will match up to a total of $600,000 for every dollar raised making your dollars stretch even farther and work even harder! ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Due to a need for quality charter schools in the area, in 2017 SVN embarked on an expansion plan to expand its program from one class per grade to two, increasing the student population from 207 to 414 by the year 2022-2023. As of the 2021-22 school year SVN serves approximately 381 students. SVN’s philosophy is that every child can learn and be successful. Every child deserves to have an environment that supports learning, including the tools necessary to achieve success. To that end, SVN constructed and opened a 16,000 SF addition with mostly borrowed funds and some donations to serve the expansion grades to include 8 classrooms: space for 5th and 6th grade, flexible learning spaces, Art, Music, Science, Technology, a Family Wellness Room, and a small Teaching Kitchen. SVN is excited about the future! DEMOGRAPHICS: SVN consistently serves a diverse population in the city’s urban core, comprised of 90% minority groups, 93% poverty as determined by the National School Lunch Program’s (NSLP) poverty guidelines for free/reduced lunch eligibility, and 62% English Language Learners. The students of SVN reflect the surrounding neighborhood with 85% of families living within a two-mile radius. Reaching out to families in our community aligns with SVN’s mission: to provide a safe, healthy, collaborative community of engaged learners who are inspired academically while fostering a supportive network for its families. PARTNERSHIPS SVN is proud of its collaboration with community partners and their programs, including the Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences located just a few short blocks away (KCU). KCU conducts annual health screenings through its "Score One" program. In addition, medical students from KCU bring their "CHAMPS" program on-site to work with children and their parents to improve their choices in activity and food in order to better their health. SVN utilizes the Kansas City Community Garden's Giving Grove program to create garden space for students to work and learn the benefits of gardening. SVN students receive annual dental screenings from the Seton Center. SVN utilizes "Start At Zero", a non-profit program that works with children and their parents to promote healthy early childhood development. Thank you for your time and consideration! We hope that you will choose to become part of SVN's story. Best, The SVN TEAM!
