About This Cause

Northland Therapeutic Riding Center (NTRC) is a nonprofit, 501c(3) organization founded in 2000 in response to a strong community need for therapeutic riding. NTRC opened in April of 2001 at Rosewood Stables with two children and four horses growing to 83 students weekly and 13 horses. Northland Therapeutic Riding Center is now located on 32 acres 23 miles north of Kansas City, Mo. The property was donated to NTRC in 2016. The facility includes a house, office, stable, barn and three pastures. Fifteen horses are boarded, cared for and trained to support 80 to 90 riders. NTRC received its PATH accreditation in 2001 and received its Premier Accredited Riding Therapy certification in 2014. Five therapeutic riding instructors and the program manager are certified through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.), a federally-registered 501(c3) nonprofit formed in 1969 as the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association to promote equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) for individuals with special needs. 100 volunteers are trained at NTRC to assist riders while they are riding and experiencing equine therapeutic activities. Each rider requires one to three volunteers for each of their eight-week (once/wk) riding sessions. The privacy of the Center allows riders and their families to experience therapeutic riding in a compassionate environment supported by trained horses, quality equipment and professionals who are qualified to accommodate their special needs.
