Mission Statement
Union Station Kansas City is dedicated to preserving its historic monument and its stories, inspiring lifelong learning, and creating lasting memories for our community.
About This Cause
Originally constructed in 1914 as a massive railroad terminal, Union Station quickly became a centering point for commerce, culture, and community. Today, over 100 years later, Union Station Kansas City—a 501(c)3 non-profit organization—has reclaimed those monikers and added more. Today, this historic self-sustaining landmark is Where Kansas City CelebratesTM. What the critical Bi-State Initiative helped save and reopen in 1999, we now carefully and thoughtfully grow and guide to meet the needs of Kansas City for the next 100 years. And Kansas City’s Science Center, Science City, serves as our foundation and filter, informing so many of our decisions. Science City Powered by Burns & McDonnell boasts over 325 interactive and static exhibits covering nearly 100,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor space. Internationally awarded for “Visitor Experience” by ASTC and regionally awarded in 2022 and 2023 “Best Family Fun Center” by Best of KC, Science City is one of the country’s top 25 science centers. Annually, we educate and entertain hundreds of thousands of science-thirsty children and adults of all ages. Inquisitive young minds explore science through hands-on experiences and non-stop fun. Science City leads the region in recognition from educators, parents, caregivers, and children alike. In addition to our marquee Science Center, Union Station proudly features our wildly popular Model Railroad Exhibit; the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium; the Regnier Extreme Screen Theatre, the City Stage featuring live theater; a selection of unique shops and restaurants; and prominent area civic organizations and businesses. Our Bank of America Gallery regularly hosts world-class traveling exhibitions, such as Auschwitz: Not long ago. Not far away. and Disney100: The Exhibition. As for community gatherings, Union Station has become Kansas City’s living room and front porch, hosting multiple Chiefs Super Bowl parades and the 2023 NFL Draft. Union Station is a living piece of history that contributes to the community's strength and vibrancy. We are excited to continue the important work of bringing programs and exhibits to Kansas City that represent a variety of different perspectives, experiences, cultures, and histories. We believe such programming enhances our city’s ability to be even more inclusive, just, and equitable, and that it advances our mission of inspiring lifelong learning and creating lasting memories that reflect our entire community. Continually evolving and always inventing new ways to make learning meaningful and fun, Union Station has become the regional destination for families, groups, and special events. This self-sustaining landmark in the heart of downtown Kansas City is where citizens come together to connect, create, discover, and celebrate. Union Station teaches young students. It delivers world-class exhibitions. And, of course, it celebrates and inspires the diversity of the over 2 million guests we welcome annually.
