Mission Statement
The Opportunity Network ignites the drive, curiosity, and agency of underrepresented students on their paths to and through college and into thriving careers, powered by our commitment to access and community.
About This Cause
The vast majority of New York City public school students from low-income backgrounds, even those who are highly motivated and academically high-achieving, cannot fully realize their academic and economic potential without assistance. Coming from families and communities that lack the experiences and social capital to guide them through the process of applying to selective colleges and universities, securing internships and building a network that can be used to obtain a career-track job in an industry of interest, these young people need exposure, guidance, knowledge and skills if they are to become thriving professionals. To meet this need, we offer a six year Career Fluency® trajectory for OppNet Fellows that includes the following four pillars: • Career Awareness and Exposure: Fellows set college-to-career goals and are grounded in the fundamentals of how organizations work, broad-based knowledge of a wide spectrum of careers and the academic and professional pursuits required to be successful in those careers. • Professional Etiquette and Skills: Fellows learn standards of excellence in professional etiquette through workshops such as Marketing Your Assets, Developing Your Professional Resume, Drafting Your Cover Letter, Active Listening, Phone Etiquette, Professional Dress, Email Etiquette and Certification, Diversity in the Workplace, Contact Management, and Dining Etiquette. • College Access, Preparation, Transition and Persistence: A full range of workshops prepares Fellows to transition to and succeed in college and includes Budgeting and Financial Management, Time Management, College Practicalities, Self-Advocacy on Campus, Health and Wellness, Adapting to College Academics, and Finding and Forming Communities on Campus. • Networks and Social Capital: Fellows engage in innovative training that drives home the undisputed role that networks and social capital play in achieving college and career success: how the world turns on personal connections and trusted relationships and how to build, sustain and leverage lifelong support networks.
