About This Cause
Established in November 2007, Café on Vine is the only free meal site in the Quad Cities which provides meals to the public 365 days a year. The meals are prepared from food which is donated by various donors in the community – five restaurants give us food each week, some wholesalers provide us with large amounts of food at various times during the year, four churches operate garden ministries and provide us with much fresh produce in the summer and fall, farmers and hunters provide us with most of our meat, and individual donors give us food in smaller amounts. Many times we are asked for items which may be donated to the Café. In May 2018, we expanded our services to offer a breakfast meal service Monday through Friday. This change occurred after news was received of Timothy’s House of Hope closing which served a breakfast service three times per week. A total of 625 meal services will occur at Café On Vine over the course of a year. Our outcome is simple yet complex when you think about all the components required serving two meals per day Monday through Friday and one meal each day of the weekend. The planning and organizing is done by our staff for all the meal services. Meals consist of a main entrée, one or two sides, a self-serve salad bar, desserts, and one or two beverage choices along with coffee and water. During the months of November through April we also serve soup each day. On most days milk is one of the beverage choices, and fresh fruit or vegetables are served each day of the week. Over the course of a year, Café on Vine will serve 50-55,000 meals. Approximately one-half of the daily guests are homeless living in one of the area shelters, on the street, or wherever they can. The others are poor from the neighborhood, transients, and those in temporary need of assistance with a meal. Many of our guests capable of working are un- or underemployed, many are seriously mentally ill or addicted, and 15-20% are physically handicapped or suffering serious medical conditions. Our guest ages range from babies to the elderly – most of these two extremes are present when weather conditions are such that they can walk to the Café.
