About This Cause
Grow Pittsburgh is a nonprofit that serves as a resource and guide for backyard, school and community gardeners, as well as urban farmers across the Greater Pittsburgh region. Our mission is to teach people how to grow food and to promote the benefits that gardens bring to our neighborhoods. Growing food is a key factor in building and supporting healthy and equitable communities in Pittsburgh. Founded in 2005 by three urban farmers, we have grown and adapted our programs over the years to meet the changing landscape and community-identified needs and priorities for growing food in our neighborhoods. Grow Pittsburgh develops and supports food-growing initiatives and programs across the region as a key way to improve the social, economic, environmental, health, and educational realities of people in our community. We estimate that 40,000 Allegheny County residents are supported annually through our programming. Our work can be summarized in three approaches: We teach people how to grow food through school garden curriculum, teacher trainings, workforce development for youth, adult workshops, and other resources. We grow food for our community through our urban farm sites, providing affordable chemical-free fresh fruits and vegetables at our farm stands and through donations to free food distributions. In 2022 this work is greatly aided by our expansion into Wilkinsburg via our newest production site, Garden Dreams Urban Farm & Nursery. And we build and support gardens for PreK-12 schools and communities throughout Allegheny County. Grow Pittsburgh’s Mission, Vision and Values are essential to our work and the lens through which we make all key decisions from program development and evaluation to human resources and hiring.
