Mission Statement

Grow Pittsburgh's mission is to teach people how to grow food and promote the benefits that gardens bring to our neighborhoods.

About This Cause

Grow Pittsburgh was formed in 2005 as a nonprofit community outreach effort by three urban farmers. Over the past 20 years, Grow Pittsburgh has become the premier urban agriculture organization in the region, which supports three main program areas: School Gardens, Community Gardens, and Urban Farm Production and Education. Our work can be boiled down to three approaches: 1) We grow food for our community through our 3 urban farm sites and 45 community gardens, providing affordable, sustainably grown fresh fruits and vegetables to residents in low-income neighborhoods. Our farm stand distributions have reached 230% more people in distressed communities since the pandemic, up from 2,185 in 2020 to 7,089 people in 2024. 2) We teach people how to grow food through school garden curriculum, teacher training, workforce development for youth and adults, public workshops, and other resources. Throughout the past year, we provided paid apprenticeships and workforce development training to 24 high school students and 22 farm apprentices, as well as 16 workshare volunteers. We also hosted 887 workshop attendees and reached 27,500 students through our educational programming. 3) We build and support gardens for preK-12 schools and communities throughout Allegheny County. Since 2016, Grow Pittsburgh has expanded its School Garden Program from supporting four elementary schools to maintaining a network of 70 gardens at schools and early childhood centers. Our community garden network has built 45 gardens over the past 15 years and annually supports the expansion and improvement of more than 45 additional existing gardens.
