Mission Statement
To provide stimulating and enriching musical and educational experiences for audiences and performers in the tradition of Johann Sebastian Bach.
About This Cause
In recognition of Johann Sebastian Bach and his lasting influence, The Bach Society of Saint Louis Chorus & Orchestra presents an annual concert season at different venues throughout Greater St. Louis. Repertoire is not limited to music composed by J.S. Bach, and programming ranges from small orchestral chamber concerts and acapella choral concerts to large, sacred oratorio works with over 100 local musicians. Last season, The BSSL welcomed 4,523 audience members to 14 different events. 9 of the 14 events were presented free of charge and took place at 13 different locations, in 13 different zip codes. Founded in 1941, The Bach Society is St. Louis’ oldest continuous chorus and is comprised of 60 voices (25 are paid singers). The BSSL Orchestra includes a select pool of local, professional union (paid) musicians and guest soloists are engaged from all over the world. The BSSL strives for artistic excellence and continues to gain recognition through creative and collaborative programming. The annual Christmas Candlelight Concert was named among BBC Music Magazine’s Top 10 Live Christmas Events in North America and, most recently, both Chorus America and the American Guild of Organists have approached the BSSL about performing at their National Conferences. In 2017, we dramatically expanded our concert series to include free Community Concerts and an annual St. Louis Bach Festival. The Festival has created unique opportunities for collaboration with numerous, local diverse organizations in unique venues throughout Greater St. Louis. Just as Bach’s music continues to influence later generations of modern composers, Festival events are creatively crafted to connect his music to modern jazz, African-American spirituals, Indian Classical music, cabaret, opera, dance and even visual art! This type of varied programming, along with hiring more BIPOC artists and creating more online content has helped to increase audience size and diversity.
