Mission Statement
Shine Together’s mission is to create opportunities for economic mobility for two generations, by helping young mothers advance their education, build life and career skills, and nurture their child’s positive development. We believe that education is the key to maximizing each person’s potential and making communities strong.
About This Cause
Research shows teen mothers are more likely to live in poverty, depend on public assistance and drop out of high school. Shine Together’s (Shine) two-generation approach provides young moms with the support needed to: · complete high school and post-secondary education, · develop the skills to nurture their child’s positive development · enhance their financial literacy · improve health and wellness for themselves and their child Shine serves approximately 120 young mothers in three communities that have high rates of teen pregnancy (San Jose, Sacramento and Fresno). Participant demographics are: · 82% Latinx, 7% Black, 7% Multi-ethnic, 4% White · Average age at intake: 17 · 88% living in poverty · 48% are the child of a teen mom Shine’s staff and leadership reflect the young mothers served: 100% of the agency’s executive staff are women of color and many have the shared lived experience of having been a teen mother.
