In Sierra Leone families face one of the world’s highest maternal and child death rates. Our mission is to partner with rural communities in Sierra Leone to improve maternal and child health.

About This Cause

The mission of Rural Health Care Initiative is to partner with rural communities in Sierra Leone to strengthen health care systems and to overcome one of the world's highest rates of maternal and child mortality. RHCI is currently working in the rural Tikonko Chiefdom, Southern Province. Funding is from individual donations, churches and fundraising events in Minnesota, USA. RHCI strives to achieve its mission and goals through its programs: 1. Operating two Maternity Waiting Homes in rural areas, with bed capacity of 35 2. Mobile Outreach clinics to 16 villages 3. Child health program including malnutrition program and newborn home visits 4. Strengthening of 4 government health units with supplies and stipends 5. Transportation program for medical emergencies 6. Food security and agriculture program All paid staff are local Sierra Leoneans in-country. Over 20 full time and many part-time staff are employed by RHCI. The Minnesota volunteer staff make annual trips to Tikonko Chiefdom to evaluate and advance the programming. RHCI has a 12 member board of directors in Minnesota and an RHCI Advisory Committee in Tikonko.
