About This Cause
The Omega Baltimore Foundation, Inc. (Omega Baltimore) mission is to address and facilitate the mental, physical and spiritual needs of underserved West Baltimore Community residents with a primary focus on uplifting youth as well as older adults. This includes a Youth Development Initiative which combines recreation (including nutrition and fitness), mentoring (academic, social and spiritual), homework and academic support (including educational and cultural field trips), lifestyle skills, service learning and parental workshops. Another component is the Healthy and Active Aging Initiative that provides support for older adults in the areas of nutrition, fitness, intergenerational experiences, basic computer tutorials and other personal growth activities A 501c3 non-profit organization, Omega Baltimore has a public private partnership with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks (BCRP) to manage and operate the Easterwood Recreation Center in the Coppin Heights /Ash Co East Area of West Baltimore. This endeavor was in conjunction with Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s plan to enlist community organizations to be responsible for programming under-served city recreation centers. The center had been closed four years and the children in the community had no recreation center to have a safe and fun environment. Omega Baltimore was awarded the lease to manage and operate Easterwood Recreation Center by the City Board of Estimates in December 2011; the final agreement was signed in June 2012. The doors of Easterwood opened in November 2012 providing free hot meals and computer access to Baltimore City students after school daily. The after school meals program is sponsored by the Family League of Baltimore City through the at-risk after school snack and supper program. Omega Baltimore serves approximately 35-45 kids per day/ 175-225 kids per week. Within Easterwood, a room has been transformed into a 15 unit computer lab and the entire facility has free Wi-Fi access. Since FY 15, Omega Baltimore has conducted STEM and STEAM Out of School Time Programs for elementary and secondary school youth, concentrating on coding & 3d printing, 3D design and prototyping; also programming microcontrollers to sequence lights and move motors. Youth are introduced and taught the Engineering Design Process, the method by which career engineers create new products and tools. Due to COVID19 currently 70 youth are enrolled in our Virtual STEAM Program. Omega Baltimore funds and conducts sports programming at Easterwood Recreation Center, including Football, Basketball and Baseball leagues and Camps. Due to COVID19 our sports camp have been held virtually and Omega Baltimore provided over 70 Free Amazon Fire Tablets to youth with Zoom Programming to participate in a Skills and Drills Football 12 week program with NFL players and coaches facilitating the program.
