About This Cause

Personal Choice is the cornerstone of our services. Research confirms that, in general, adults with disabilities living in their own homes, with appropriate supports, are less lonely, healthier, financially better off, and more satisfied with their lives than continuing to live dependent on family, or in State-operated institutions, or group homes. The best home is the home a person selects for themselves. To support these choices FI by CPSH provides training for home and community safety, budgeting, accessing affordable housing opportunities, and support services for all life stages. To meet our mission we have established collaborative relationships with housing authorities in North Texas, resulting in our service to inform and educate people with disabilities and their families on how to access affordable housing vouchers through the Mainstream Housing Voucher Program. Our unique position has brought safe, affordable housing to many in North Texans and continues to be a much needed and sought after resource from families. Recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has created an increased demand for affordable housing for people with disabilities of all races. This continuing challenge further threatens these residents in achieving financial security in a changing world. With COVID-19, CPSH was no longer able to meet in person so we adapted and modified our training to a virtual platform. Rather than a set-back, our outreach continued to expand to every corner of the State enabling more people to access much needed FI by CPSH resources. Our published guide, from birth to adulthood, available on Amazon helped broaden our outreach across Texas. Finding Independence by CPSH is the recognized expert on affordable housing and independent living support for residents with disabilities in Texas. Our decade of history of serving individuals with disabilities, their families, participating on State planning boards for housing, and advocating with local housing authorities has earned us this distinction. In concert with the development of unmatched educational programs, FI by CPSH has a laser focus on creating community living options for people with disabilities. FI by CPSH knows that caregiver parents want quality of life for their young adults with disabilities, expecting all the advantages and opportunities of those without disabilities, and in homes where they live independently. CPSH has represented their needs before local councils, state agencies, and federal housing regulators to meet these expectations. Our campaign to assist those trying to afford a decent place to live on an income of $794 in Social Security Income resulted in a Circuit court settlement requiring the local housing authority to offer Mainstream Project-Based Housing Vouchers to persons with disabilities for the first time in years. We will broaden our scope to include other marginalized and overlooked Texans whose economic and health needs are surprisingly similar to people with disabilities. Stakeholders in the success of our vision include all ethnicities, races, ages, and abilities. In the community, stakeholders will be engaged from concept through realization of the vision. Community acceptance and participation are vital. FI by CPSH excels at collaboration with human services agencies, local and state government, and housing authorities. We have an impressive resource of professional volunteers across the country in the legal profession, communications, data management, public policy, technology, and even the arts.
