About This Cause
After many years operating from a few shelves in the basement of the Holy Cross rectory, the decision was made in 2008, in anticipation of the coming recession, to move the shelves to a more accessible space, to make its availability and location better known, and to expand its hours of service. Late in 2008, the Colchester Food Shelf registered as a Network Partner of the Vermont Foodbank, which allowed it to purchase food at discounted prices to supplement food received from the community at large. The Food Shelf relies for help and supplies on continued donations from Colchester churches, schools, organizations, and businesses such as General Dynamics Employees Council, Sam Mazza's Farm Stand, Dick Mazza's General Store. The Fanny Allen Campus of Fletcher Allen Health Care recently collected food and a $500 cash donation at its Founders' Day Celebration. The cash has been matched by the Fanny Allen Corp.
