Mission Statement
To prevent childhood obesity and inspire a love of movement in K-8 students by providing in-school programs, classroom teacher support, and community connection through educational fitness.
About This Cause
Healthy Moves is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization bringing movement, fitness and fun to elementary students through a six-week trainer-in-residence program. Due to school budget cuts, many physical education positions have been eliminated, leaving classroom teachers to teach PE classes, many times without specialized training. Healthy Moves trainers work with students and their teacher, demonstrating fitness activities and providing a model the teacher can use for future PE classes. This approach reduces the teacher planning time for physical education and gives students fitness activities they enjoy. The students develop physical skills required in state teaching standards. Healthy Moves provides teachers with a fitness format that can be used by all teachers grades K-5th. Benefits of the Healthy Moves Program Schools play a particularly critical role by establishing a safe and supportive environment with policies and practices that support healthy behaviors. Schools also provide opportunities for students to learn about and practice healthy eating and physical activity. Healthy Moves offers benefits to schools and students in promoting child physical activity in the following ways: 1. Teachers and students learn a standard warm up and cool down exercise that can be done consistently in all PE classrooms. 2. Teachers and students are exposed to activities designed by professional trainers that may add procedural and instructional diversity to future PE classes. 3. Students benefit by experiencing new ideas for activities, exposure to a professional PE advocate, and encouragement to gain strength, flexibility, coordination and endurance in their daily lives. 4. School districts gain greater visibility for their commitment to PE instruction with teachers, students and parents.
