Mission Statement

AugustHeart is a free heart screening program offered to San Antonio area teens in an effort to reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac death in youth.

About This Cause

AugustHeart was launched May 2011 with a bold vision: to establish and fund a free community-wide cardiac screening program for teenagers in an effort to minimize the risks of sudden cardiac arrest. AugustHeart has organized a rapid, low-cost, scalable cardiovascular screening model using physician volunteers and paid technical staff to screen teens to identify cardiac conditions predisposing a young person to sudden cardiac death. The heart screenings include an electrocardiogram (ECG) and if necessary, an echocardiogram (ECHO). These tests allow cardiologists to evaluate the structure and electrical activity of the heart to identify students who might be at risk of a cardiac event. AugustHeart works closely with the pediatric cardiology community to enhance our efficacy in discovering lives that can be saved. Improvements we implemented helped ensure we screen adolescents more accurately and efficiently. These improvements focus on five of the most common cardiac conditions predisposing a young person to sudden cardiac death for which we believe we can effectively screen, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and enlargement of the aorta, as well as electrical problems such as long QT syndrome (LQTS) and Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome. We are proud to report that our ability to correctly identify individuals with these disorders exceeds 99%.
