Mission Statement
Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi (SCH) has a mission to inspire communities to care for coastlines. SCH envisions a world of inspired people, clean beaches, and healthy coastlines. Our mission is realized through our two pillars: Action & Inspiration. Within the action pillar, SCH uses large-scale cleanups and restoration festivals to activate community around the issue of plastic pollution to focus attention on proactive solutions to the problem. We also work at events and with businesses to move toward zero-waste through our SustainEvents resource recovery and composting program. Within our Inspirations pillar, our (Re)Learning team works directly in classrooms around Hawaiʻi (and the world through online presentations), using hands-on and experiential learning to foster a connected future generation of change makers. Our outreach team creatively uses online media and innovative experiences to reach millions - ages keiki through kupuna.
About This Cause
Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii 3160 Waialae Avenue Suite 120, Honolulu, HI 96816 FEIN: 45-2596726 Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii is a registered 501c3 with the mission of inspiring local communities to care for their coastlines through hands on cleanups. It is our belief that the physical action of participating in a Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii cleanup will lead to behavioral change aimed at improving the quality of our coastlines. When people recognize items they pick up during cleanups are the same items they use in their every day lives, they make the connection that by reducing the use of these items they will have a tangible effect on our own and others coastlines. Behavioral change such as reduced plastic use, recognition of consumer behaviors, and stewardship creation is promoted and fostered by our trained volunteers who share important data and stories that fuel inspiration and understanding. In order to create large cleanup events we utilize multiple techniques that have proven extremely successful. We start with outreach in schools, community groups, and within local government. These outreach activities include classroom visits where presentations educate students about the detriments of marine debris and how they can make simple changes in their lifestyles to help aid in the rehabilitation of our environment. Similar presentations are given to community groups and meetings with local government stakeholders educate them on the necessity of keeping our coastlines clean along with simple ways to accomplish this goal. We also participate in fairs, concerts, and festivals where we promote our upcoming events and educate participants about plastic reduction and inspiring coastal stewardship. We also utilize an active social media campaign that allows us to network a vast web of like-minded individuals and groups. These relationships allow us to leverage and access new individuals and encourages people to spread the word about our work and upcoming cleanups. Lastly and most importantly our events are known as fun, interactive, and rewarding. We make sure our participants are having fun and learning. Working in large groups allows for quicker progress and community awareness. We add local food, live music, guest speakers, and games for the kids with giveaways as additional incentives for participation. By utilizing a multi-pronged approach to raising awareness and encouraging participation in our events, we are able to attract individuals and groups from all spectrums of life. Our fully encompassing approach and welcoming style that fosters cooperation and collaboration has allowed us to thrive in our environment. The result of our work is improved quality of the coastline that can be sustained through the creation of stewards for our environment.
