Mission Statement
Inspire and accelerate a crewed mission to Mars by uniting and empowering Space Enthusiasts around the world.
About This Cause
Mars Initiative The Mars Initiative exists to accelerate and inspire a crewed landing on Mars while giving as many people around the world a chance to take part as possible. We believe the first crewed expedition to another planet is the main hurdle to humanity becoming a multiplanetary civilization. Including as many people as possible makes the mission truly representative of humanity and helps make it a reality sooner. We are an all-volunteer 501.c.3 nonprofit based in Texas. We have three main projects: Mars Prize Fund We’re building a Prize Fund for the first successful crewed mission to Mars. This can be thought of as a public savings account. We are accepting donations from people across the planet and have currently raised over $25,000 (we ultimately need several million to make a significant impact and are accelerating our fundraising). The goal is to use voluntary donations from people around the world to raise funds to accelerate this mission. It is an easy, accessible way for people to join our generation’s ‘Apollo Project’. The cost/distance of that first trip will be about $100 a mile, so we are allowing people to sponsor a 'Mars Mile' for every $100 in donations to the Mars Prize Fund that they make. That could be $100 at one time, $10/month, or even $2/month for 4 years. Once donors hit $100 in total, we send them a certificate with a specific Mars Mile number. We have 172 miles sponsored as of August 2021. Micro-G The Educational Micro Grant (Micro-G) program was created to educate and inspire the generation that will first explore the red planet. Through the Micro-G program, we award small grants of about $300 to educators around the world to purchase materials to help teach anything related to outer space. We run in quarterly cycles and have currently awarded 20 grants for items like Microprocessor kits, simulated Martian soil, a sun spotter, and hydroponics equipment. We are seeking to expand into larger grants as our donor base grows. Space Innovation Grant The Space Innovation Grant (SIG) is our newest program. It’s a competitive grant for Mars and space-related start-ups, small companies, and other small space related groups. Supporters of these organizations can vote through donating on which company will win the competition. The Mars Initiative is currently supporting 3 space sector start up companies: Neutron Star Systems, Stellar Amenities, and Project Helios. The intent of the grant is to give these companies a head start financially to be able to focus on innovation. Summary We are creating a vehicle for people around the world to support more space Exploration, Education, and Innovation with just a few bucks a month. A new, exciting way that anyone around the world can get involved in exploring the cosmos and accelerate the human voyage to Mars.
