Mission Statement
Thrive Collective (aka 20/20 Vision for Schools, Inc.) exists to transform New York City public schools by mobilizing students, families, and community groups to partner with schools for sustainable change. Functioning primarily as a match-maker, Thrive facilitates public-private partnerships that leverage the assets and influence of community, business, and faith-based groups in neighborhoods characterized by chronic under-performance to meet felt needs at local schools. Originally launched as an awareness campaign in 2008, 20/20 incorporated in 2011 to deepen its ability to provide on-going capacity building for schools and community stakeholders to establish and sustain these partnerships. In October 2013, our flagship school PS 34 in the Lower East Side received its second consecutive overall “A” score on the Department of Education’s School Progress Report, after six years of incremental improvements. This past academic year, 20/20 inspired hundreds of community leaders and educators to create school and community partnerships that provided sixty-seven programs and services in thirty-two New York City public schools; mobilized thousands of volunteers as mentors, coaches, tutors, visual and performing artists, interns, motivational speakers, classroom instructors, donors, school supply providers, and more; and served dozens of principals, faculties, and 30,000 students enrolled at thirty-two schools in seventeen community school districts.
About This Cause
Thrive Collective creates hope and opportunity through arts and mentoring in public schools. Thrive’s programs – Murals, Music, Media, and Mentors – connect artists and youth workers with local students and schools as teaching artists, art directors, and mentors. Project based learning integrate life and art skills, as students cultivate a shared vision and bring that vision to life collaboratively. In 2018, Thrive’s core programs worked with 3,000 students in twenty-eight schools, producing thirty-two school murals totaling over 10,000 square feet of public art; nearly forty art festivals, ribbon cutting celebrations, and school assemblies; a dozen student films; and 100% of graduating seniors from its School Mentors programs were accepted into college.
