Mission Statement

We envision a community of comfortable and confident lifelong riders. We see a future in which all ages and abilities can explore and connect with their communities by bicycle, and all have access to bikes at an affordable cost. Our mission is to enable historically underserved populations to access their interests by bicycle. We accomplish our mission by providing direct services to the public including: * Bicycle education and encouragement * Skills training and support for new riders * Deployment of bicycles, equipment, and maintenance facilities * Support to organizations and projects that are mission-aligned * Route maps * Incentives to parents to ride with their children to school and adults to commute by bike * Solutions to community transportation barriers

About This Cause

Ghisallo Cycling Initiative is a 501(c)(3) non-profit providing bicycle education and encouragement in Austin and San Antonio. Since 2011, we have provided in-depth after-school Bike Clubs, high volume safety clinics, and learn-to-ride programs for youth in Austin. We began serving older adults (50+) and seniors (65+) starting in 2015 through the launch of our Golden Rollers trike program, expanded to San Antonio in 2018, and launched City Cyclist programs specifically designed for adults in 2019. We provide direct services to the public as well as provide support to organizations through access to bicycles, capacity building, and deployment of educational components to increase access to and integrate biking into everyday life. The primary work of Cycle Academy is to enable youth to develop into self-sufficient and confident riders who have the skills and knowledge to use their bicycles for transportation without depending on adults. With a focus on exploration, navigation, and transportation, we create the opportunity for youth to explore and connect with their communities, to learn to navigate and access the city, and to use their bikes for transportation to the park, the pool, their friend’s house, and school. We work predominantly with underserved 3rd-8th grade students and provide semester-long, after school Bike Clubs, a free Youth Bike Shop and Earn-A-Bike program, Bicycle Skills Challenge programs, and maintenance and safety clinics. Since 2013, we have served more than 23,000 youth participants via Bike Clubs and Earn-A-Bike programs and another 25,000+ through Bicycle Skills Challenge programs (advanced bike rodeos) at over 40 sites across Austin and San Antonio. These programs are supported by an in-house bike fleet of over 700 bicycles and tricycles.
