RESOUND ENSEMBLE

Mission Statement

Resound is a chamber chorus of volunteer mixed voices based in San Francisco. We believe that ensemble singing is a visible metaphor of different people coming together to create beauty and harmony. We believe there is no disconnect between art and popular music, and we juxtapose unlike pieces to reveal something impossible if they were performed alone. When people ask us about the music we sing, we often say we're the ensemble of the shuffle generation!

About This Cause

Resound Ensemble was started in 2011 to be an inclusive, diverse group of men and women that can perform a wide variety of music, both classical and popular. We have the ability to feature both small and large groups, newly commissioned works and arrangements as well as choral standards. We perform an eclectic repertoire that reflects the way people listen to music today—shuffling on smartphones and MP3 devices through a wide variety of music. Over the last four and a half years, the choir and our audiences have expanded dramatically. Additionally, we have consistently elevated our musical ability and the difficulty and complexity of what we are able to perform. We have commissioned three new modern classical pieces, and 9 new arrangements of popular music. Our programming continues to express our eclectic nature, with a range that includes the Herbert Howells Requiem; the World Beloved bluegrass mass by Carol Barnett, contemporary composers such as Eric Whitacre, Ola Gjeilo, Abbie Betinis, John Rutter, Jonathan Dove and Arvo Pärt; and Medieval chant through Renaissance madrigals to Romantic era composers Rachmaninoff and Schubert. We have performed in Russian, French, Persian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Spanish, Hebrew, Swahili, German and Latin. Our public offerings have included three Audition Workshops, empowering and educational opportunities for people to learn what happens in a typical audition; how to best showcase their abilities, sight-sing effectively and be successful in auditioning for Resound Ensemble or other groups. A Composer Workshop in the fall of 2014 provided six composers the opportunity to hear their works sung by Resound Ensemble and to participate in a master class on composition by David Conte. We have also had two Art and Music Galas, hosted by Peggy Gyulai, a local artist, who uses our singing to inspire her paintings. Our 2014-15 season was our most ambitious and successful yet, as we focused our energy on performing the unique bluegrass mass, A World Beloved, at our Spring 2015 concert, which led to record-breaking crowds totaling 492 people over 4 concerts with our largest chorus to date, of 50 singers.
