Mission Statement
We empower our community with the confidence and creativity needed to buy, cook, and eat good food every day.
About This Cause
18 Reasons is a nonprofit community cooking school on a mission to empower our community with the confidence and creativity needed to buy, cook, and eat good food every day. To achieve this mission, we offer three food education programs. At our 18th Street Kitchen in San Francisco, we host paid cooking classes with chefs from around the world, and ticket sales help support our free programming for low-income families. Through our free Cooking Matters and Nourishing Pregnancy programs for low-income families, we offer grocery donations, cooking and nutrition classes, and peer support. We are the only organization in San Francisco that offers free, hands-on cooking classes and free groceries to low-income adults, families, and kids. 18th Street Kitchen: Our 18th Street Kitchen plays nightly host to interactive, online, and in-person cooking classes, cheesemaking and fermentation workshops, dinners with farmers and food producers, tasting seminars, and just about anything we can think of that will help our community become more excited about cooking and eating good food every day. We open our doors during the daytime for corporate team-building experiences and private rentals to inspire groups of colleagues and friends to cook together from scratch. Our guest teachers are passionate about home cooking and sharing their experiences in kitchens across the globe. 18th Street Kitchen events are offered on a fee-for-service basis, with scholarships offered for each class. Ticket sales support our free Cooking Matters programming. Cooking Matters: Each year, through our free Cooking Matters program, we teach thousands of low-income adults, kids, and families how to buy, cook, and eat good food on a tight budget. We use evidence-based, learner-centered curricula proven to help our participants make lasting healthy changes and enjoy improved food security. Our interactive, online, and in-person classes pair hands-on cooking practice with culturally appropriate nutrition discussions and healthy grocery donations. The food skills education we provide allows food-insecure households to tap into their ingenuity and make the best possible use of their food resources. Cooking Matters classes are facilitated by peer health educators (low-income community members whom 18 Reasons trains and employs to teach in their own neighborhoods and languages) and volunteers who are passionate about sharing their love of healthy home cooking. Nourishing Pregnancy: Nourishing Pregnancy works with Black and Latinx families to increase food security, cooking confidence, and community support in order to advance health and well-being. Families stay enrolled in Nourishing Pregnancy for six months, attending weekly classes focused on healthy eating/cooking and social support groups to foster community and belonging. Weekly free grocery deliveries help pregnant and postpartum families easily access healthy food, while peer support helps birthing parents and their families build relationships and support networks that will last beyond pregnancy. Through our three programs, we serve a diverse range of Bay Area residents, who are connected by a passion for good food and home cooking. We are a nonprofit, and rely on a mix of grants, donations, and ticket sales to keep our programs running. Our vision is to create equity and belonging through the transformative and healing power of home cooking.
