Mission Statement

The World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS) was founded in 1960 by eminent intellectuals including Einstein, Bertrand Russell and the founding Director Generals of UNESCO, FAO and WHO. The academy is a transnational association of committed individuals drawn from diverse cultures, nationalities, occupations and intellectual pursuits spanning the arts, humanities and sciences. Our members are united by a common aspiration to address the urgent challenges and emerging opportunities confronting humanity today. Our focus is on addressing global social challenges and opportunities to promote human security and wellbeing, with emphasis on the social consequences and policy implications of science, technology, education and other forms of knowledge. Our mission is to promote transdisciplinary, integrated research and policy formulation to promote the value of human rights, security, dignity, equitable and sustainable development for all. The Academy’s motto is “Leadership in thought that leads to effective action."

About This Cause

A transnational academy, global think-tank, non-governmental organization and network of networks with 700 fellows from 91 countries drawn from all fields of knowledge, arts and public service elected for outstanding distinction in their fields of work, transdisciplinary perspectives and a commitment to global public service. WAAS conducts research and outreach transdisciplinary programs in peace and security, global governance, higher education, economy, finance, employment, global leadership, science and art in search of solutions to pressing challenges confronting humanity today. WAAS has been accorded special consultative status with UN ECOSOC and consultative status with UNESCO. We work with a broad range of international institutions, universities and NGOs, including UNESCO-Bridges, International Parliamentary Union of 180 parliaments, Interacademy Panel of 150 science academies, the Consumer Technology Association (CES), Force for Good UK, and the SDSN international networks of universities. Key impact areas for the Academy’s work during the next five years: 1. Social Transformation: Rising levels of insecurity, uncertainty, doubt, distrust, intolerance, political instability, retreat from democracy, and polarization of society presents serious challenges to governance and promotion of human security. WAAS is researching the underlying root causes of insecurity and evolving practical catalytic strategies to reverse the backslide from the gains achieved since the end of the Cold War by addressing the retreat from human rights, democracy, international cooperation, multilateralism and peaceful international relations. 2. Platform for Human Security: WAAS offers a unique platform for advancing human security to create a more fair, sustainable and secure world, a UN partnered campaign to advance human rights, sustainable development and multilateralism 3.Transforming Higher Education: Person-centered, contextual, transdisciplinary, value-based education as a driver for conscious social evolution to address the challenges confronting humanity. Development of AI driven platforms and courses for self-paced, transdisciplinary higher education, vocational training and life-long learning. 4. Technology as a Force for Good: Strategies to address the emerging threats from AI and related technologies while encouraging technology companies to focus on solutions related to employment generation, education and training, data security, and human rights. Collaboration with major corporations and UN agencies to help match corporate capabilities with needs of developing countries for financing and technology transfer in areas related to digital connectivity, digital health, education and vocational training. 5. Financing Solutions: Innovative financing strategies combined with technological innovations can fill the gap between global investment needs and funding required to achieve the 17 sustainable development goals and addressing the full range of human security needs. We engage with business and technology leaders and top global financial institutions to highlight opportunities that are financially, commercially and socially viable. 6. AI & Virtual Reality Learning: AI educational and training platform to accelerate learning in fields, develop and disseminate self-paced, customized, interactive, individual life-long learning systems for all subjects, conduct training for college students to enhance their learning rates, develop AI platform learning delivery systems and AI-based decision-making systems. 7. Platform to Engage the Public: Mobilizing the public is essential for changing attitudes and gathering support for fundamental change related to peace, human security, cooperation, and environmental sustainability. Global Voices is a transnational platform that empowers the global public to shape collective social consciousness and advocate for systemic change. 8. Science for Human Security and Sustainable development: UNESCO and International Science Institute backed consortium of 50+ organizations that focuses all fields of science research to address critical human security and sustainable development issues, promote effective science diplomacy with policy-makers, and develop integrated regional, transdisciplinary research-policy-delivery system models for implementation globally. Human Security for All Human Security is a comprehensive, integrated approach promoted by the United Nations in support of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It's a human-centered approach that seeks to mobilize support and action from the general population. It empowers individuals and fosters new leaders. Covid-19, the war in Ukraine and Climate Change have thrust human security to the top of the UN Secretary General’s agenda. In January 2023 WAAS launched a global campaign called Human Security For All (HS4A) in collaboration with the UN Trust Fund for Human Security with a grant of $300,000. The campaign was launched at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show, the world’s largest technology exhibition, which attracted 120,000 business and technology leaders and the world’s largest technology companies. Other campaign partners include the Inter-Parliamentary Union of 170+ national parliaments; the Inter-academy Panel, of 140+ national academies; EarthX, the world’s largest environmental expo; the UN SDSN global network of universities working on sustainable development; the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU); Global faith-based groups; film festivals, art exhibitions, and youth leaders. For more information: www.humansecurity.world/progress-report/ The objective of the campaign is to contribute to the establishment of human security as a universal benchmark for effective development strategies in the coming era and become a framework for faster responses and recovery from global pandemics, address the threats of climate change, accelerate implementation of the SDGs, address emerging threats such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, and project human security as a unifying theme and force for enhanced multilateral cooperation with a strong focus on prevention and preparedness. Transforming Higher Education Transforming education driven by AI to provide a new paradigm in higher education through a low-cost, global delivery system; affordable, value-based, transdisciplinary, life-centered, person-centered curriculum that fosters human security, independent thinking, creativity, innovation, universal values, responsibility, development and collective action for the global public good. Education is an essential instrument and catalyst for social transformation. WAAS has long recognized the urgent need for thinking beyond existing models of education to complement and enhance the social impact, reach, accessibility, quality and affordability of education globally. Systemic change is needed in every aspect of education—including knowledge delivery systems, evaluation, accreditation, content, pedagogy, and teacher training. WAAS has undertaken an in-depth multi-year study to identify strategies to foster a global delivery system based on a new paradigm in education that bridges the quantitative and qualitative gaps in the current system, integrates fragmented disciplines, realigns abstract theory with the complexity of the real world, and is founded on a pedagogy that shifts the focus from standardized, mass production to customized, individualized learning that fosters person-centered, value-based, independent thinking, and creativity. WAAS, in collaboration with the World University Consortium, has conducted 7 international conferences and dozens of roundtable symposiums in addition to numerous articles and reports identifying key elements of the paradigm shift needed. The 8th international conference in India is scheduled for late 2025. Technology for Human Security Focusing on the emerging opportunities, challenges, risks and threats associated with rapid advancement and application of technological innovations, such as AI, digital communications, breakthroughs in the basic sciences, and global existential risks. The UN concept of Human Security initially encompassed seven dimensions of security — Community, Ecological, Economic, Food, Health, Personal, and Political. WAAS expanded this in 2023 to include technology. We aim to harness the potential of cutting-edge technologies to protect and empower individuals, promote inclusivity, and mitigate threats that can undermine human security. By combining innovative tools, data-driven approaches, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the project aims to foster a safer and more resilient society and foster collaboration among researchers, technology developers, policymakers, and civil society organizations. Our work includes a current project for framing ethical standards and guidelines for recent AI technologies that will assess the preferences and concerns of segments of the world population. Financing Solution Creation: Innovative financing strategies combined with technological innovations can fill the gap between global investment needs and funding required to achieve the 17 SDGs and address the full range of human security needs. This initiative involves engagement with business and technology leaders and top global financial institutions to highlight opportunities that are financially, commercially and socially viable. WAAS is working with research partners on several initiatives to increase availability of funding for investment in the SDGs. The first involves research to identify strategies to enhance private sector bank investments by identifying projects which meet investment criteria or, if necessary, introducing public sector measures to make them acceptable investments. WAAS is also supporting research on creation of central bank direct currencies specifically tailored for investment in the SDGs. This research has attracted considerable interest by some central banks.
