Mission Statement

What sets Rural Dog Rescue apart from other dog rescues, is that we are committed to saving the lives of dogs who are often overlooked for adoption or rescue. We save the dogs at greatest risk of being euthanized: hounds, black dogs, senior dogs, handciapped, sick or injured dogs. Our rescues come from high-kill shelters in rural North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. We transport them to the D.C. area, provide them with veterinary care and foster homes, and then find them forever homes via weekly adoption events and AdoptAPet.com.

About This Cause

Rural Dog Rescue was founded in 2011 and located in Washington, DC. We support several high kill shelters that euthanize in 72 hour and who’s kill rate is 70% or higher in rural areas of Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina. Rural Dog Rescue also helps dogs in need in Washington, D.C. and Maryland. A dedicated network of volunteers: Based in Washington, D.C., Rural Dog Rescue relies on a dedicated network of volunteers in the Washington, D.C. region and near shelters in rural areas of Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Our rescue is 100% volunteer-based with individuals assisting in the transport, adoption and constant care of dogs without any compensation. Rooting for the underdogs: We focus on efforts on shelters that euthanize over 70% of dogs or euthanize in 72 hours. We rescue a range of breeds from Chihuahuas and Dachshunds to hounds and Labrador mixes, and more! As part of our efforts we make a commitment to rescuing the “underdogs”, animals that are often overlooked in shelters because they are sick or injured or senior . Currently, we work with shelters in the following areas: Rutherford County, NC; Beaufort County, NC; Gloucester, VA; Pocahontas County, WV. To date, RDR has placed over 1,600 dogs in forever homes, and helped individuals find the newest member of their family. In 2014 & 2015, Rural Dog Rescue won the Hilly Awards’ Nonprofit of the Year. Rural Dog Rescue is located at 733 8th Street SE. We hold adoption events every Saturday and Sunday from 12-2pm.
