Mission Statement
The mission of the Leading Change Network is to develop and support new civic leadership with the skills and capacity they need to organize their communities, build power and win the cultural, economic, and political change needed to revitalize the democratic project.
About This Cause
Rooted in community organizing, social movement, and civic traditions, in 2012, LCN grew out of the work of Marshall Ganz, his collaborators, their students, and others. Underpinning this work is a unique pedagogy for organizing that we understand as a form of leadership, that enables people to turn the resources they have into the power they need to make the change they want. In the last 12 years our network of trainers have supported major social and political campaigns of our time to build the leadership and organizing capacity needed to win. This includes, but not limited to, Barack Obama’s successful field campaign of 2007/8, the DREAMers movement and more recently March for Our Lives, where we have supported their leadership team to scale the movement as a national organization with the capacity to lead change of the deeply rooted systems that sustain gun violence in America. Since 2012 LCN has expanded beyond the US and currently includes people and organizations from more than 30 countries who are working on the ground in areas of women's rights, electoral politics, refugee & immigration rights, freedom of media, healthcare, corruption and many others. Furthermore, these people are further enabling leadership in their communities by delivering trainings in more than 30 different languages. In the last 5 years alone, our network of 220 educators has enabled more than 32,000 people around the world to begin learning the craft of organizing and to put those skills to work in their own communities. In the last 7 years, with our support and guidance, hundreds of grass-roots campaigns have been launched and we continue to be engaged with all of these initiatives. These change makers harness their desire to turn challenges of today into opportunities for the future by acquiring and mastering the skills needed to turn motivation into successful collective action. Learning is a continuous process Our experience has taught us that the introduction to the craft of leadership and organizing is just the beginning. After learning new skills, one needs a community to help hone their craft, build their leadership and support their work on the ground; Leading Change Network's Community of Practice provides precisely that - a community of continuing support for local leaders. Furthermore, LCN develops capacity on the ground by providing coaching and support directly to leaders & campaigns. We are called to step up our efforts Recognizing how great the need is world-wide for people-driven change, we decided to step up our effort and provide a systemic response to it – in 2018 we launched LCN as a professional organizing organization that provides space for continuous learning of leadership based organizing, provides support and coaching for on the ground work to individuals, organizations and campaigns, and creates space for a community of practice active in over 70 countries worldwide to come together and learn from each other. We achieve this through 3 program areas: 1. Community of practice--- We nurture our community of practitioners by creating online and in person spaces to bring those leaders together to share their experiences, learn from one another, connect and work together to amplify their impact and build resilience. 2. Coaching and support --- We support existing leaders in their on the ground work through coaching and mentoring programs for them, their organizations & campaigns. 3. Learning organizing ---We create structured learning environment that allows for the most effective application on the ground. We do this through online and in-person trainings on Public Narrative and Organizing. We are constantly improving the curriculum based on improvements in the practice and teaching, and we are providing the most relevant materials to our members through our ever-growing resource center.
