Mission Statement

FOUNDED IN 1995, Organs R Us (ORU) promotes healthy organs pledging to: 1. Protect organs by replacing pills with exercise and nutrition (lectures, coaching), 2. Increase organs for transplant for millions worldwide with organ failure, 3. Encourage countries to require organ donation unless citizens opt-out, 4. Support genetically matched organs eliminating the need for organ donors. AWARDS • 2014 Humanitarian Award from California State Senate • 2014 Road Runners Club of America National Outstanding Volunteer Award • 2007 Silver Jefferson Award from CBS 5, KCBS Radio, San Francisco (SF) Chronicle • 2006 Jefferson Award from CBS 5, KCBS Radio, San Francisco Chronicle • 2005 Best Bonding Experience Award from San Francisco Bay Guardian • 2000 First Family Pledge Award from American Society of Transplant Surgeons • 1997 Community Recognition Award from California Transplant Donor Network • 1997 “Most unique to run Bay to Breakers in its 86-year history,” SF Examiner. • Winner (transplant division!): Golden Gate Relay (GGR), Bay to Breakers, San Francisco Marathon, San Jose Half Marathon, CA International Marathon and more. TRANSFER of the baton from runner to runner during the 190-mile ORU Golden Gate Relay (GGR) symbolizes the transfer of an organ and reminds families to discuss organ donation. During the 1997 GGR, US President Bill Clinton signed a GGR shirt for 3-year-old Delaney Corbitt after she received a new kidney. After Nicholas Green donated organs to seven Italians (“Nicholas Effect” book; “Nicholas’ Gift” CBS film), Maria Pia Pedala (received Nicholas’ liver) attended the 2004 GGR covered by four television stations and 18 publications (including Reader’s Digest). Multiple fire departments run for Napa County Fire Fighter, Ken Oeveren who received a kidney on 1/25/19. ORU (ORU and Friends 501c3 Tax ID 45-3266453) generates publicity (more than $25 million) about the need for organs, supports families waiting for donors, provides Transplant Olympics scholarships and purchased computers for registering organ donors. ORU promotes healthy organs through athletics and public speaking (Train Well – replace meds, vitamins and supplements with exercise and nutrition). ORU has no paid executives. RUN, walk, volunteer, donate a magic $1 or an organ with a team or 12 crossing the Golden Gate Bridge near midnight or on a virtual course in your country. The GGR adventure unites communities globally in a celebration of life, running and teamwork while promoting organ donation.

About This Cause

During the Golden Gate Relay, 12-member teams run 36 legs (3 legs per runner, 3-8 miles each) from Napa Valley to the Pacific Ocean (through 36 cities) and across the Golden Gate Bridge at midnight in support of Organs R Us and 125,000 Americans waiting for organ donors. The tranfer of the baton from runner to runner symbolizes the transfer of an organ from donor to recipient.
