About This Cause

The Foster Network, formally known as East River Foster Parent Network, was established in 2011 when a group of like-minded foster parents were seeking support for their foster care journey. We took this opportunity to support, educate, and increase awareness. In early 2012 we acquired our non-profit status. We started with support groups and education opportunities. As we grew, we were able to help offset some of the financial burden for foster families like beds, dressers, camps and sports fees. We then added a clothing closet, where children in care can get clothing at no cost to them or their foster families. Our current programs are: The Assistance: Help offset financial burdens, by providing beds and dressers to keep large sibling groups together. Help with camp, clubs, sport fees, and cultural activities to encourage socialization and normalization. The Closet: We provide a safe and caring environment for foster parents and children in care to come and receive a welcome bag (hygiene items, new socks, underwear, shoes, pjs, books, journals, diapers, wipe), clothing for 1-2 weeks, seasonal items (coats, snow boots, hat gloves), baby equipment. The Events: We provide monthly events for families and children affected by the foster care system. (Swimming, movies, back to school, Christmas party) The Support: We offer a connection to the community by acting as a hub connecting programs in our community to our families and children in care. We support through support groups, educational programs, and newsletters. We want to help siblings stay together when they enter care and make sure each child can have "normal" experience and help support them through their foster care journey and into reunification or adoption. These experiences should not be hinged on whether the foster family can afford it. We also provide a network for families and children, so they know that they are not alone, there are other people who can help and who share their experiences. As we continue to grow, we would like to add more programs, like graduation program (Help with graduation announcements senior pictures and more), prom program (Help with a prom dress or tux, hair, nails, and more), we want these children to have the same experience other children do.
