Mission Statement

The Whiskeytown Environmental School Community exists to support educational goals through immersive outdoor experiences for learners at Whiskeytown Environmental School (WES). WES Community contributes to the school's mission through advocacy and relationship building with communities, businesses and public agencies to generate funds and to further shared goals.

About This Cause

Since 1970 local students have had the opportunity to study 5th or 6th grade science curriculum while spending a week away from home at Whiskeytown Environmental School (WES), known affectionately as “WES Camp”, or in the early years, “NEED Camp”. Three generations of youngsters have walked the trails, slept in the cabins, and delighted in the natural world at this unique campus. The school began and continues as a partnership between the local Shasta County Office of Education (SCOE) and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (WRNA). We have supported the camp experience by raising donations and public awareness. As concerned citizens we communicate with the partners, sharing that our community values the legacy of learning. This cherished common experience is more precious now that the Carr Fire has burned the surrounding landscape. Since the fire disrupted the program at Whiskeytown Environmental School, we have fostered the conversation that will lead to rebuilding “WES Camp” for future generations. WES Community has become the official Nonprofit Philanthropic Partner to raise funds committed to rebuilding and renovations at WES. "Grow Back Stronger" is a multiyear campaign that seeks to fulfill the financial support needed to bring students back to WES full-time.
