Mission Statement

Hack Manhattan is a public community space for technical and creative activities. We provide a community, tools and materials for our members and the public, who work on projects in diverse areas as machining, electronics, 3D printing, sewing, beer brewing, gardening and beekeeping.

About This Cause

Hack Manhattan started in a tiny space in an industrial building on 14th Street in Manhattan as a public space for artists, hackers and tinkerers of all sorts. Our early activities focused on electronics and 3D printing. In 2012 we built and showed BRAIN BATS, a public art project at the FIGMENT festival on Governors Island, which was featured in The New York Times. We still try to do a big group project every year, and subsequent projects have included an electronic fortune teller and FACETRON6000, a photo booth that types out portraits using a typewriter. Today we provide a space open to the public with tools and materials for a variety of creative activities, including laser printing, beer brewing, machining, 3D printing, sewing and electronics. The scope of projects is limited only by members’ and visitors’ interests (and the limited space we have in the Manhattan real estate market). More important than any tools is the community, both in-person and online, where we share project ideas and advice and learn from each other. While the focus is non-commercial hobby projects, a few startups started out using the facilities at Hack Manhattan.
