Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide shoes to the homeless and to those in need, free of charge, in local communities throughout the United States.
About This Cause
Shoe for the Homeless, Inc. (SFTH) was founded in 2011 by podiatrist Ira Diamond, DPM as a means of providing shoes to the homeless and those in need in local communities, free of charge. Dr. Diamond saw many homeless who had no shoes or inadequate shoes in his practice and when he was volunteering in the Podiatry Department at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. By founding SFTH, thousands of homeless individuals have received shoes. With walking often being their only mode of transportation, shoes are vitally important. A good pair of shoes provides comfort, protection from the environment and often leads to improved quality of life and self-confidence. For the homeless, shoes often act as a leverage point that elevates people into many positive directions including employment. SFTH obtains shoes through individual donations, shoe drives and shoe retailers and distributors. After processing, the shoes are distributed to many partner non-profit organizations that directly serve the homeless and those in need such as rescue missions, homeless shelters, and service organizations or directly to homeless individuals ourselves. We are proud of the fact that all of the SFTH Board/management are volunteers who are passionate about helping the homeless take the next step forward with a good pair of shoes. We also have a very dynamic program called the Volunteer Youth Ambassador program with over 160 youth participants in 15 states. This program is active all year long and is open to all students age 13 to 18. The program not only helps the homeless, but also changes the lives of the youth participants, by learning leadership skills, how to directly helping the homeless, empathy, compassion, and empowerment.
