Mission Statement
The Sato Project is an amazing organization which rescues abused and abandoned dogs in Puerto Rico, an island currently home to an estimated 650,000 strays, despite only being the size of the state of Connecticut. The group’s efforts originated on what is unfortunately known as “Dead Dog Beach”, an infamous dumping ground for unwanted dogs in Yabucoa. Thanks to over 13 years of hard work and advocacy, this beach no longer lives up to its name and The Sato Project has been able to expand its efforts into the wider community. The Sato Project rescues dogs directly from streets, beaches, and overburdened municipal shelters. Once in the care of The Sato Project, dogs are rehabilitated with the highest standards of veterinary care and flown to new homes in the mainland US. Since The Sato Project’s founding in 2011, the organization has flown approximately 7,500 dogs off the island to new forever homes. The Sato Project is also committed to building permanent change for all of Puerto Rico’s animals. The Sato Project has been spaying/neutering and vaccinating animals for free through their voucher program in Humacao for years, but recently launched a series of mass sterilization & disease prevention clinics called #OperationSato, which is on track to service 3,000 dogs in its very first year since inception. They have also distributed over 150,000 pounds of humanitarian and animal relief supplies in the wake of Puerto Rico’s multiple natural disasters, and reunited over 230 dogs with their families who became separated after Hurricanes Maria and Fiona through its “No Dog Left Behind” program. The Sato Project aims to disrupt the stray overpopulation crisis on the island of Puerto Rico once and for all through systemic change and a new definition of rescue philosophy.
About This Cause
The Sato Project is determined to end this suffering. Our small but mighty team works around the clock to save as many lives as possible. We address the underlying causes of and solutions for Puerto Rico’s stray dog crisis through seven primary programs: Rescue and Rehabilitation, Freedom Flights to the Mainland, #OperationSato (Spay/Neuter/Vaccinate/Community Outreach), Adoption & Shelter Placement, Disaster Relief, Education & Awareness and Sanctuary by The Sato Project. The Sato Project primarily works in the municipality of Yabucoa, on the southeastern coast of the island, which has been rated the poorest of all 78 Puerto Rican municipalities.
