Mission Statement
AWE helps asylum seekers and survivors of torture rebuild their lives and their spirits. AWE’s unique program model focuses on companionship and mutual support as asylum seekers journey together to heal from torture and trauma and build a new life for themselves and their children in Baltimore.
About This Cause
AWE is the only organization in Maryland that provides holistic services to asylum seekers and other forced migrants. It is the largest provider of housing to asylum seekers in the Mid-Atlantic. AWE currently offers holistic support for all participants including: 1) emergency and transitional housing; 2) English as a Second Language (ESL); 3) job readiness and workforce development; 4) case management; 5) linkage to representation in their legal case OR provision of private representation through the legal defense fund; 6) medical services on-site through the Healthcare for the Homeless mobile clinic; 7) individual and group mental health services on-site through Intercultural Counseling Connection; 8) parenting classes; 9) mindfulness activities such as music therapy, creative arts, meditation, and acupuncture facilitated by volunteers and pro bono practitioners; 10) material assistance (hot lunch, clothing, food, baby supplies); 11) opportunities to connect with the larger community and each other.
