Mission Statement
The Merrimack River Greenway Trail is envisioned to be a paved, continuous and primarily off-street path roughly following the Merrimack River in Concord, New Hampshire.
About This Cause
The concept of a riverside greenway trail along the Merrimack River in Concord goes back to 1990, when the Concord Conservation Commission and the Five Rivers Conservation Trust partnered to plan the development of the Concord section of the Heritage Trail. In March 2011, the feasibility study was accepted by the Concord City Council and the Trail was formally incorporated into Concord’s "2030 Master Plan" by the Planning Board. As a result, Friends of the Merrimack River Greenway Trail was incorporated in November 2011. The Trail is envisioned to be a paved, continuous and primarily off-street path roughly following the Merrimack River in Concord, New Hampshire. Originally envisioned as a 12-13 mile long "greenway trail", the recent abandonment of almost 6 miles of railroad corridor means the trail will now be a "rail trail" for about half its length. The Trail will serve transportation and recreation purposes, provide access to the Merrimack River and adjacent open space, and provide safe and inviting health and fitness opportunities. Friends of the Merrimack River Greenway Trail is composed of a board of trustees who are individually and collectively committed to the Vision and Goals set forth by the organization’s charter. The Board of Trustees is assisted by Concord City staff, volunteer community members serving on committees, and by ad hoc volunteers helping with discrete tasks, such as fundraising and awareness raising events.
