About This Cause

Located in Marshfield, Wisconsin, the Marshfield Area Pet Shelter is a 501(c)3 non-profit animal welfare organization serving the greater Marshfield area. On August 20, 2020, MAPS moved into its new 9,000 sq ft state-of-the-art facility located at 3500 Downwind Dr. We began our lifesaving mission in September of 2011 when a small group of concerned citizens took the time to review the current process for handling stray animals for the city of Marshfield. In reviewing the process, a necessity was realized; our community desperately needed a humane pet shelter and more importantly, our pets deserved a higher quality of care than they had been afforded for many years. In February 2012, the Marshfield Area Pet Shelter was established as a non-profit organization to promote the humane treatment of animals and provide protection, care and shelter for unwanted and homeless animals. In January 2013, we acquired a parcel of land in the Air Business Park on Marshfield’s south side at the end of the cul-de-sac on Downwind Drive to build our new home. In October 2013, volunteers renovated an empty space inside Marshfield Mall to finally have a physical presence in our community. We began housing adoptable cats at this location in February 2014. The space was known as our Adoption Center. In June 2015, we retrofitted an old airport terminal building at 210 W 29th Street to serve as an animal shelter so we could begin taking in stray animals for the City of Marshfield and the surrounding areas. From Oct 2013 to March 2020, we operated within two separate locations: our intake shelter on 29th Street and our Adoption Center inside Marshfield Mall. Our adoption center was permanently closed in March 2020. On August 15, 2019, a groundbreaking ceremony for our new facility took place and construction began in Sept 2019. On August 20, 2020, our new facility was completed and we moved all our animals to our new location. Our dream has come true for local animals and the people who love them. $1.5 million dollars was raised to build the first humane animal shelter for the Marshfield area. Nine years in the making, we are now equipped to provide brighter futures for homeless animals.
