Mission Statement
Our mission is to enhance lives through therapeutic visits with caring volunteers and their pets. We strive to 1) provide caring volunteers dedicated to sharing their pet’s love by engaging people in a variety of community settings, 2) build connections between volunteers and facilities seeking animal assisted activities and therapy and 3) increase awareness and provide education about the many benefits of pet therapy.
About This Cause
Creature Comfort Pet Therapy (CCPT) provides individualized pet therapy visits in 8 New Jersey counties to persons in need of solace and healing. Pet therapy, the interaction with a gentle, friendly animal, has been shown to: lower blood pressure, improve cardiovascular health, diminish overall physical pain, provide comfort, lift spirits, lessen depression and anxiety, encourage communication and socialization, increase motor skills and help children with reading skills. A pet therapy visit consists of a certified volunteer team (a pet and its owner) spending 1.5 hours with clients in a facility. Every volunteer team that works for CCPT is regularly evaluated, certified, and mentored, and every facility that receives services enters into an agreement that outlines the scope of the relationship. CCPT embraces a hands-on approach in providing services and works with each facility to help structure the visit to make it as effective and productive as possible. Certified therapy teams are able to choose from a variety of types of visits, and staff will make visit recommendations based on a volunteer’s interest and the energy level of their pet. To date, CCPT has certified more than 450 pet therapy teams, including dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs and a mini goat. CCPT offers both recurring pet therapy visits and special request visits. The recurring pet therapy visits include animal assisted activities, where therapy teams regularly visit any number of people at a given facility and spend as much time as necessary with each person, and animal assisted therapy, where therapy teams are incorporated into a treatment plan and work one-on-one under the direction of a professional therapist. CCPT will also fulfill one-time special requests where therapy teams will provide healing comfort or program information about the benefits of pet therapy at local events, forums and conferences. In 2019, CCPT's 270+ pet therapy teams volunteered 5,000+ hours to serve 70,000+ individuals through 3,500+ scheduled visits at 200+ facilities. CCPT as an organization has grown from a start-up charity run by its founders to a professional non-profit organization being led by an experienced, full-time paid Executive Director and 5 staff members (1 paid full-time, 3 paid part-time, and 1 unpaid part-time).
