Mission Statement

Reduce euthanasia rates for medically dependent neonate kittens through action and education.

About This Cause

Kitten Central is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Federal Tax ID 45-4060879, that was founded by Penny Dougherty in January 2009, incorporated in 2010, and received non-profit status in February 2011. We are not a rescue, we do not intake kittens from the public, nor do we do adoptions. We are the only organization of its kind in our area that provides a comprehensive medical fostering program for orphaned neonate kittens under 28 days old. These kittens are very fragile and are often euthanized due to the lack of shelter resources to provide the round the clock critical medical care they require. We offer our specialized medical fostering services to those rescues and shelters to fill that need and save those lives. Since our inception, our partnership with our local municipal shelter, Placer County Animal Services, has resulted in their achievement of a 0% kitten euthanasia rate. As a result of these dramatic results, Placer SPCA also signed up as clients to reduce their euthanasia rates. We also support smaller local rescues. Once kittens are accepted into the program, under the direction of our Medical Directors, Patricia Colley, DVM, MPVM, and Karen Vernau DVM, MAS, DACVIM Neorology, Kitten Central provides individualized care in highly trained, loving foster homes that includes a complete age appropriate medical protocol. We also provide specialized outside veterinary services with our partner vets, as required, to ensure every kitten’s needs are met for a quality life. Kittens remain in the program until they have completed this medical protocol, have been tested for Leukemia, spayed or neutered, microchipped, and have received a medical adoption clearance exam from one of our licensed veterinarian partners. At that time, the kittens are returned to the sponsoring rescue with a complete medical history for a healthy adoption.
