Mission Statement

Project 351, a nonprofit leadership organization, believes that young people have unlimited potential to be remarkable agents of change in their community and our world. Annually, educators select an eighth grade Ambassador to represent each of Massachusetts' 351 cities and towns for an exemplary ethic of service and the values of kindness, compassion, humility, and gratitude. We place a special premium on unsung heroes and quiet leaders, and the rich diversity of our Commonwealth. For a year’s term, Project 351 invests in the Ambassadors’ capabilities to make possible a path of service leadership that challenges them to be courageous and compassionate, civically engaged and accountable, and agents of positive change committed to achieve Dr. King's vision of the Beloved Community.

About This Cause

Project 351 believes that every young person is remarkable and that within them, lies the tools, vision, and desire to build a more just, inclusive and united global community. Each day, we strive to build a movement of upstanders, changemakers, and bridge builders by investing in the courage, compassion, and capabilities of an eighth grade Ambassador from every city and town in Massachusetts. In partnership with our young leaders, educators, and school districts; we develop the conditions to lead change -- a confident, knowledgeable Ambassador; committed and compassionate Alumni mentor; engaged school communities; a statewide community of volunteers to facilitate enrichment and impact; and a network of innovative nonprofit partners, for whom we are privileged to serve. Our mission has never felt so urgent. In this time of increased and dangerous polarization, our Ambassadors' humanity, magnanimity of spirit, and devotion to cause greater than self builds optimism for a world characterized by enlightened civic discourse and responsible stewardship. For the last decade, we've witnessed this rising generation build their capacity to inspire and lead, devote their skills and passion to affect transformative change, and model kindness and engaged civic action. With both wisdom and idealism, they pursue a world defined by the ideals of our democracy and the vision of Dr. King's Beloved Community. And, it all starts in eighth grade. Annually, educators select their hometown Ambassador for an exemplary ethic of service and the values of kindness, compassion, humility, and gratitude. We place a special premium on the recognition of unsung heroes and quiet leaders, and an Ambassador community that reflects the rich diversity of our Commonwealth. Since 2011, we've been fortunate to engage 3,753 eighth graders for a year's term of enrichment, mentorship, civic engagement, and immersive service leadership. The Ambassador Journey includes two Unity Events (Launch Day honoring Dr. King and Leadership Reunion at Gillette Stadium) with Governor Baker and First Lady Lauren Baker; three statewide service campaigns; and Memorial Day: United in Remembrance, a platform for civic leadership and patriotism. Our Alumni organization reflects a Leadership Continuum that further elevates, educates, and engages high school and college leaders as organizational governance and catalysts for impact. Our aspiration is to develop a diverse pipeline of social change leaders that infuse every sector with innovation, entrepreneurship, and values. Alumni from our earliest Classes give testament as they join Americorps, the military, run for elected office, and found nonprofits, foundations, and social enterprises. In our first nine years, Ambassadors and Alumni have impacted more than 780,000 neighbors through transformational service. As they lead, they cultivate the values of kindness, empathy and inclusion in schools and communities; build awareness for critical issues facing our world; and strengthen the ethic of youth service.
