About This Cause
Freedom to Read, Inc. (FtR) is committed to changing lives through the positive power of free access to literacy. Bahamians in the Family Islands have traditionally been denied access to library resources due to the financial and geographical challenges of an archipelago nation. We partner with local settlement leaders to promote improved education by way of providing print and electronic resources along with ongoing training and support. As we improve leadership capacity in each settlement we are enhancing the opportunity that free access to literacy can provide in a third world nation. The child who grows up to find the cure for Diabetes or High Blood Pressure may be from one of the Family Islands in the Bahamas. FtR believes that making lasting educational contributions through the development of libraries and computer centers in the Family Islands will cater to intellectual curiosity and discovery.
