Our mission is to provide the programs and services needed to eliminate the killing of at-risk animals due to lack of space, adopter, or foster.
About This Cause
Since its inception eleven years ago, San Antonio Pets Alive! (SAPA!) has saved more than 68,000 dogs and cats by providing the last chance safety net for those who have fallen through the cracks of all other lifesaving options and end up on the City Shelter’s euthanasia lists, often with just hours to be saved. SAPA! promotes the availability of these dogs and cats to other rescues, adopters, and fosters and is the only rescue partner that has a building on Animal Care Service’s campus. SAPA! continues to be the high-paced, high-volume rescue in the San Antonio area, and to be all that stands in the way between life and death for thousands of animals each year. Sadly, help is needed more than ever, as just recently, San Antonio Animal Care Services is no longer considered a “no-kill” shelter, with a live release rate sometimes below 80%. In 2022, SAPA! saved nearly 5,000 dogs and cats, finding 3,531 of them their forever families. Last year, we were able to transfer 790 dogs to one of 110 rescue partners throughout the country saving their lives and easing the burden of the pet overpopulation crisis here in San Antonio. Thankfully, we are expected to triple this number this year, as we have recently partnered with a transport company that will be making far more trips to the Pacific Northwest, Wisconsin, and even Canada.
