Mission Statement
Sharp Again Naturally educates and empowers individuals to take charge of their cognitive health and general well-being, while offering support and resources to the public and medical community to optimize, improve and potentially restore cognitive function using a scientifically based multi-therapeutic approach.
About This Cause
Since its inception, Sharp Again Naturally (SAN) has been at the forefront of advocating a multi-therapeutic approach to brain health focused on prevention and early diagnosis/treatment. This approach has now become mainstream, and has been supported by multiple studies in the medical community. However, this information needs to reach the general public, many of whom view dementia and even Alzheimer's as something that happens as a normal result of old age - something the Centers for Disease Control have stated is not the case. Multiple causes of memory loss are now being identified, many of which can be prevented, slowed and even reversed with early diagnosis and treatment, including lifestyle and nutritional changes. With over 5 million people suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease in the US alone, and many more worldwide, it is time to get this information out. Dementia affects not only the patients themselves, but their families, caregivers, and indirectly, all of us. The billions of dollars being spent on research and caring for this population can be better targeted and greatly reduced, respectively, if it is more widely accepted that memory loss is preventable and most successfully addressed in the early stages. Much of the information surrounding brain health and the regaining of cognitive function has been scattered. SAN and its Medical and Dental Advisory Board (MDAB) have brought together this information, backed by scientific research, into a protocol that individuals, family members and caregivers can follow. The drumbeat of “there is no cure for dementia” has felt like a death sentence; it is nothing short of mind-bending for people to hear that dementia has many causes, and they can be addressed and reversed, sometimes completely. One of our primary goals is to encourage people to seek help as soon as they begin to notice any sign of cognitive impairment, instead of hiding due to fear and shame. For those with dementia in their families, they can begin following the multi-therapeutic approach TODAY. Specifically, this approach: • Allows each of us to actively prevent cognitive decline • Gives hope to those experiencing memory loss • Saves potentially millions of dollars in medical treatment and caregiver hours • Prevents years of heartache and suffering for individuals and family members • Empowers each of us to take greater control of our health How We Accomplish Our Goals SAN increases awareness through our well-researched, informative and user-friendly website; presentations; educational programs; newsletters and other materials; and outreach via social media and webinars. We have also been featured on a number of podcasts. We are building on medical research, and the experience of the health professionals who sit on our board and facilitate our outreach, to provide action-oriented programs to help people understand causes of memory loss and dementia and how to address them. This tiered approach is affordable for everyone and includes: free webinars around specific causes of memory loss and suggestions for taking action and fee-based a small group program for individuals concerned about their cognition. In the program, participants work with health coaches in a supportive and intimate small group setting, learn from experts, and take steps to improve cognitive function through the setting of personal goals. The program is accessible to the widest possible audience, with scholarships to assist those with financial need. Because communities of color are disproportionately affected by memory loss, as are those from lower-income households, we are making inroads to address their needs by working with community leaders to create programs specific to these populations. During the next twelve months, we will be building a Professional Referral Directory that will assist individuals in finding integrative and functional medicine doctors, holistic dentists, health coaches and other practitioners. The Directory will be interactive and searchable, and will enable people to easily find integrative and other specialized healthcare providers. Providing this type of service is consistent with SAN’s mission to empower everyone to take better care of their brain health and their overall well-being, and addresses many of the inquiries we receive each week. Our diversified SAN Board and Medical and Dental Advisory Board, volunteers and collaborative partners are working together, continuing to monitor research for new possible causes of memory loss and bring what we know into public awareness. Sharp Again Naturally believes everyone has the right to live their entire life with their cognition intact. We know it is more than a possibility, and it is our intention to get this message out to the world, to help those who want to prevent and address memory loss, and to change the way memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease are treated by the medical community.
