Mission Statement
Heart Heroes, Inc. mission is to provide support to children and families affected by Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) through the distribution of superhero capes, and programs to offer hope.
About This Cause
Heart Heroes, Inc. is an incorporated 501(c)3 organization, founded in January of 2010 by mothers of children with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) living in Nebraska. Heart Heroes began with the concept of a superhero heart cape that is used as a coping tool for the children; the capes help them to feel invincible through their routine surgeries and appointments. Over the past several years, Heart Heroes has evolved and expanded to provide much needed programs to families affected by CHD. Every year approximately 40,000 infants are born in the US with CHD. CHD is the most frequently occurring birth defect and the leading cause of birth-defect related deaths. More than 50% of children with CHD will require at least one invasive surgery in their lifetime. In the US, twice as many children die from CHD each year than from all forms of childhood cancers combined. Approximately, 1 in 100 babies are born with CHD. Children’s Hospital of Nebraska performs well over 300 pediatric open heart surgeries per year. CHD does not discriminate; it does not matter your gender, race, ethnicity, economic status or geographic location. These children face extreme invasive procedures to repair their heart defects including open-heart surgery, heart catheterization, and other related surgeries. Often other complications such as stroke arise. In addition, developmental delays and learning disabilities are second nature for these children. Our recent accreditation as a CHAD member agency is a huge milestone and amplifies our ability to provide even more support to the families in Nebraska who bravely confront this lifelong disease.
