About This Cause
The Santa Cruz Dance Guild (SCDG) at International Academy of Dance, with two dance companies, Santa Cruz City Ballet and Soul Contemporary Dance, is a non-profit corporation organized and operated exclusively for charitable purposes. SCDG specifically aims to provide the benefits of dance education to at risk, low income, homeless and foster children in Santa Cruz. Additionally, the Guild produces professional productions, and conducts classes and workshops with dancers of all ages and abilities in the community. Our commitment to aesthetic appreciation, the spirit of collaboration, and the pure joy of dance to uplift the human spirit, is apparent in our fourteen years of producing the NUTCRACKER. We care about the details in all of our productions, beginning with the subject matter and dissecting every transition choreographically and technically, from the dance steps to lighting to costumes, to how the story is told, to who will be performing and what amazing guest artists we will invite.... we are obsessed. We have found that excellence is amplified by attention to detail. Our highly talented and accomplished staff is expertly skilled in articulate direction and coaching, however, we are passionate beyond steps, counts, accuracy of direction and placement. We seek to communicate emotions and joy beyond words, through dance, as a collective dance family sharing our vision with our community. Our highly acclaimed NUTCRACKER has become a cornerstone of the holiday experience in our community. Each year we strive to improve and grow and as we are delighted to say, "Each year there is something new to see." Staying the same, grows old... but growing gracefully requires constant change and renewal. Soul Contemporary Dance (SCD) invites choreographers throughout the community, in all genres of dance, to share their work in a professional, staged production offering a new annual tradition, INTERNATIONAL DANCE DAY CELEBRATION (IDDC). IDDC spotlights our diverse community of choreographers and showcase their work in a state-of-the art, theatrical setting. Participation determined from an audition/showcase in March by individual application. Artistic excellence, in our view, is a commitment to pursuing constant expansion and growth within the field of the arts, where aesthetic appreciation and discipline converge. We believe within each of us, there is potential for artistic excellence, and by collaborating with others, we help define and refine our own artistic sense. Through the discipline of practice, education, and refinement of technique; we aspire daily toward that illusive horizon of aesthetic, artistic communication and mastery that speaks to the heart, soul, and minds of others and seeks to elevate and enrich humanity. We are excited and delighted to bring these programs and others to our community to allow a space for audiences of all ages and backgrounds to explore their own brilliance and inner artist on our collaborative road to elevating and enriching humanity.
