About This Cause

MADE IN HOPE works to address human trafficking (the exploitation and violence against women and children) both in the United States and internationally by raising awareness of the problem and mobilizing individuals, communities, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to tackle the problem at its source. By working with these groups, we provide alternatives to at-risk populations and reduces demand for the product and services of exploited people. We support and protect populations vulnerable to exploitation in the Asia-Pacific region by providing them with educational resources and economic opportunities, while also assisting in their physical, psychological and spiritual needs. We aim to further strengthen preventative measures in vulnerable and marginalized communities to alleviate factors that create at-risk environments. We develop and distribute a program(s) that can serve as a basis and a best practices infrastructure for aftercare (rehabilitation) providers to survivors of exploitation both in developed and developing countries. Lowering the incentives to trade and demand for the product and services of exploited people. The United Nations Economic and Social Commission of Asia and the Pacific has noted the particular vulnerability of the Asia Pacific region with respect to human trafficking: The Asia Pacific region is seen as the most vulnerable region for trafficking because of its huge population pyramid, growing urbanization, and extensive poverty. Trafficking is a violation of human rights. Victims of trafficking suffer from physical and mental abuse and social stigmatization. They become isolated, losing ties with their former lives and families. At the societal level, trafficking undermines development efforts and raises social and health costs. The ongoing abuses of human rights and the growing social and economic inequality within and between countries has led to an environment in which many women have few choices and resources, and are thus vulnerable to being lured, mislead or forced into being trafficked. Women who are most vulnerable to being trafficked are those aged 10-35 and who are impoverished, uneducated or from indigenous, ethnic minority, rural or refugee groups. Such women often lack access to education and meaningful employment opportunities. Harmful cultural and customary practices also perpetuate discriminatory and violent practices that further diminish women's opportunities and lead to further marginalization and commodification. MADE IN HOPE has adopted the following resolution from the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (“U.N.GIFT”): That even one young person be denied the benefits of childhood, that one young woman be subjected to the brutal humiliation of sexual exploitation and that one man become the slave of a cruel taskmaster in another country are clear signals that we must renew both our resolve as well as our initiatives to protect those who are vulnerable.
