Mission Statement
The mission of the San Francisco Market Corporation is to link the produce and food communities of San Francisco and beyond, through the successful operation and development of the San Francisco Wholesale Produce Market (The SF Market).
About This Cause
The vision of the San Francisco Market Corporation is to make the SF Market a vibrant, thriving, and sustainable food center. As San Francisco's only wholesale produce marketplace, we nurture relationships between growers and buyers, create jobs, support a healthy food system with community programs, and provide the critical infrastructure and community programs that powers the Bay Area’s food economy. The SF Market opened in 1963 as part of a redevelopment effort in SF’s Bayview neighborhood with a 50-year ground lease with the City of San Francisco. The merchants were moved from the Embarcadero Center area in downtown SF where they had been in operation since the 1870s. From 1963-2013, the Market functioned as a City-controlled entity operated jointly by the San Francisco Market Corporation and the San Francisco Produce Association with oversight from the City Controller and the Department of Real Estate. In 2013, the Market’s leadership negotiated a 60-year ground lease with the City and converted the organization to a nonprofit to ensure the long-term stability of the businesses, and to grow the environmental, health, and economic benefits of the Market. Since becoming a nonprofit, we built a LEED Gold certified warehouse, developed plans for the next phase of the reinvestment plan, created a functioning Board of Directors and nine committees, and formally launched programming (food recovery, community donations, Food Pharmacy produce sourcing, healthy retail, and educational tours) to support our nonprofit mission. The SF Market occupies 300,000 square feet of space in ten buildings (warehouses and office), providing space for 28 food businesses, and employing over 1,000 people. The SF Market provides fresh produce to local and regional grocers, specialty and upscale retailers, restaurants, hotels, caterers, and food-makers.
