About This Cause
Helping Hands Foundation of Surry County, Inc. food pantry, a Second Harvest Foodbank of NWNC partner agency, has been designated as a nourishing pantry provider due to its focus on providing the individuals and families served with healthy and nutritious options. Helping Hands wishes to engage its constituents through consumer education in food production via demonstration gardens, healthy and delicious food preparation techniques, and recipe sharing. Food insecurity is currently the primary need addressed by Helping Hands. This term refers to the USDA’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. Food-insecure households are not necessarily food insecure all the time. Food insecurity may reflect a household’s need to make trade-offs between important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods.
