Mission Statement
The mission of Groundwork Richmond is to bring about the sustained regeneration, improvement and management of the physical environment by developing community-based partnerships which empower people, businesses and organizations to promote environmental, economic and social well-being.
About This Cause
History of Groundwork Richmond: Formed in 2010, Groundwork Richmond is the twentieth “local trust” affiliate of Groundwork USA. Groundwork Richmond is a part of a larger network of local Groundwork organizations, referred to as Trusts, that make up Groundwork USA. The network is founded on the concept of independence. Each Trust is locally organized and controlled to address the needs of the community in which it operates. Each Trust strives to share the knowledge and expertise gained locally in order to achieve the mission of the national organization. We adopt the mission of Groundwork USA for the benefit of the Richmond community. Programs: Green Team Perhaps the most important work we do is with our youth Green Team. Our Green Team is comprised of local students, ages 13- 19, engaged in service-learning opportunities. The Green Team participates in environmental stewardship projects, relevant pre-employment training, community art projects, and STEAM education; all while getting exposed to the world of careers in the outdoors. Members are eligible for opportunities like: - Work Experience & Recreational Opportunities at National Parks - Participation in Youth Leadership Summits - Paid Internships - Education Enrichment With the above average crime rates in our community - the overall crime rate in Richmond is 47% higher than the national average - joining the Green Team creates a safe place for high school aged youth. It serves as a gateway to opportunities that they may not have otherwise had in their schools or in their personal lives. By providing our students with educational and career opportunities, we have been able to “change lives”. Urban Forestry In partnership with the City of Richmond & local partners, we are implementing a city-wide program to restore the local urban forest. As the city’s designated Urban Forestry Administrator, we engage the community, plant trees to reduce pollution, and track greenhouse gas sequestration to better understand & improve our community. Richmond Greenway Trail The Richmond Greenway Trail is a bike and pedestrian path that was built over an inactive railway. In collaboration with the city and Friends of the Richmond Greenway (FORG) we work to improve and activate this unique trail. We’re transforming our Adopt-A-Spots - from 42nd & Greenway Pocket Park to Carlson Meadow - into community gathering spaces. Unity Park Project Through a $5 million Proposition 84 grant from the state, local residents & community-based organizations led the design & implementation of “Unity Park”: an 8-block path along the Richmond Greenway with gardens, art, playgrounds and much more. Objectives: - Increasing the capacity of communities to improve and care for their local environment. - Reclaim vacant and derelict lands for conservation, recreation, and economic development. - Engage business, government, non-profits and communities to work together in environmental improvement projects. In short, we plant trees locally to reduce pollution, teach & train local youth, & connect underrepresented communities to the outdoors.
