Mission Statement

Our mission is to increase student achievement in Seattle public schools and support teacher effectiveness by increasing the number of caring, highly capable adults in the classroom. Our innovative model advances equity across the entire education ecosystem.

About This Cause

University Tutors for Seattle Schools (UTSS) fills a much-needed role in improving learning and equity in Seattle Public Schools. Over the past nine years, we have placed over 450 trained and culturally responsive tutors in 30 high-need public schools. There is an urgent, growing equity gap for students in the Seattle Public Schools. Low-income, students of color, and English language learners are unable to consistently connect with their teachers and schools. Long before COVID, data reflects that achievement gaps begin early and widen, making it hard for many students of color to succeed academically, stay in school, prepare for college, and compete for today’s highly skilled careers. Parents who want to help often lack the language skills, time, or financial resources to support student learning. What’s wanted and needed – yet missing – is enough teachers in the classroom to support each student. UTSS fills this gap. With most students returning to full-time in person learning in the Fall, we foresee an exceptionally high need for individualized, flexible instruction and have begun to increase both board and staff capacity to help meet this demand. We want to be able to say yes to each school that requests UTSS support and to continue to provide racially diverse, highly qualified tutors to every classroom.
