Mission Statement
Dedicated to advancing the beneficial uses of computer vision in society, and ensuring the most important technological advancements CV & AI are not locked behind restrictive closed-source licenses. In OpenCV founder Gary Bradski’s 2008 book with Adrian Kaehler, Learning OpenCV, the goals of the OpenCV project were listed as: ● Advance computer vision research by providing not only open but also optimized code for basic computer vision infrastructure. No more reinventing the wheel. ● Disseminate computer vision knowledge by providing a common infrastructure that developers could build on, so that code would be more readily readable and transferable. ● Advance vision-based commercial applications by making portable, performance-optimized code available for free – with a license that did not require code to be open or free itself.
About This Cause
The Open Source Vision Foundation, which maintains the OpenCV library, is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the beneficial uses of computer vision in society. The statement of purpose of the foundation is to advance all aspects of machine and computer vision, including: ● Development and improvement of algorithms ● Education of developers and end users ● Spreading OpenCV and increasing the number of uses and users ● Enabling free and/or commercial deployment of computer vision applications in all areas while providing an industrial-quality open and free infrastructure to help achieve these goals. OpenCV.org is operated by a small team of volunteers and industry professionals from around the world.
