The Knickerbocker Tennis Foundation works towards increasing access to tennis and fitness for families in the South Flatbush, Brooklyn area while creating a strong sense of community and love for the sport.
About This Cause
SUMMER CAMP Each summer, KTF hosts a free camp for kids age 5-18 to learn and play tennis from noon to 3, two days a week for six weeks. Beyond tennis instruction, the camp, which annually serves 70+ participants, is a wonderful opportunity for young people to be physically active, make lasting friendships, and learn more about health and fitness, in a supportive environment. At the conclusion of the camp, the kids are invited to apply for scholarships to play indoors during the fall and winter seasons at the Prospect Park Tennis Center (PPTC). Since its inception, the KTF has sponsored up to 18 kids annually for continued instruction. ADVANCED TRAINING During the summer the KTF also provides weekly group lessons for high-performing players and pairs these players with Knick members who volunteer as mentors and hitting partners during scheduled practice times. During the indoor season, the Knick gives scholarships to these talented players to further develop their tennis skills at the PPTC. This year we added a seasonal court on Sundays to allow for more practice and play opportunities. SCHOOLS KTF is working with schools in the community to offer free tennis instruction as part of the the school’s PE and afterschool programs. We encourage schools to become USTA Net Generation providers which can include free tennis equipment, training and a teaching curriculum for their staff. WHAT’S NEXT? Over the next year and beyond, KTF intends to expand tennis programming beyond its summer camp and scholarship initiative to reach additional young people in the local community. Plans include: 1) additional opportunities for advanced players, e.g. USTA tournaments; 2) expanding school-based programs to addi-tional schools, and supplementing instruction with field trips and parent/child tennis nights; 3) creative en-hancements to the summer/fall/winter programs such as clinics and special events, e.g. Friday Night Teen Tennis at PPTC and watching the pros play at World Team Tennis matches.
