Mission Statement
JB Line is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to promote the physical and mental well being of our clients, who are primarily, but not limited to Japanese immigrants and their families living in New England.
About This Cause
We provide services to clients primarily through a 24/7 hotline. We also refer clients to local resources as needed. In the case of an emergency, we are able to provide face-to-face direct support by staff and/or volunteers. 24/7 hotline: The hotline is available free of charge and provides support to clients in either Japanese or English. Case Management: When the problems cannot be solved by phone, we meet clients in person to discuss how best to proceed. We can provide information about the medical system in the U.S., welfare services, school system, elderly assistance and legal resources. We may also accompany clients to social services to serve as interpreters. We may also act as a liaison between a social service agency and a client in regard to possible misunderstandings due to differences in language and culture. Counseling: We typically refer callers to local Japanese speaking therapists. There is a therapist who offer private services for individuals, couples, and/or families in our Arlington office. If it is not possible for clients to travel, Skype may be used as an alternative. Elderly Visitations: Volunteers from JB Line make regular visits to seniors living either at home, or in long term care facilities. Since seniors generally prefer to converse in their native language, whether meeting for simple conversation or for assistance with eating or other simple tasks, this is done in Japanese. For many volunteers this is a mutually rewarding experience. DV Support: We can support those facing issues with domestic violence, divorce, child custody (especially those affected by the Hague Convention Agreement) via our 24/7 hotline. We have trained staff who have in depth knowledge about these issues. We may offer counseling (including advice on welfare issues), support services for legal issues, or referrals to shelters and/or local support groups. We can also provide services as an interpreter when necessary. Support Groups: Senior Group: A monthly event designed for seniors. Topics may include a mini-seminar on health led by a nurse, or a lecture about resources available for seniors led by a social worker. The group meets in the Cambridge/Arlington area. Women’s Group: Topics include divorce, domestic violence, financial problems, and work-life balance.
