Mission Statement

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is Northern New England's own air and space museum. With indoor and outdoor science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) exhibitions, a planetarium, observatory and full complement of STEM-centered educational programs, our focus is on engaging, educating and inspiring children, youth, families and individuals to learn about the universe in which we live, and potentially pursue careers in STEM fields.

About This Cause

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center’s mission is to inspire every generation to reach for the stars, through engaging, artful and entertaining activities that explore astronomy, aviation, earth and space science. Dedicated to two American heroes and space pioneers, America's first astronaut, Adm. Alan B. Shepard, USN, and NASA's Teacher-in-Space Christa McAuliffe, the Discovery Center is open year round, and draws visitors from throughout the world. With traveling and permanent interactive exhibitions, military and civilian air and space artifacts and memorabilia including a vintage 1956 XF-8U Crusader jet and replicas including a full-size Mercury-Redstone rocket, the Discovery Center seeks to encourage people of all ages to dive in and explore our nation's aviation and space past, present and future, learn about astronomy and Earth science, and enjoy STEM pursuits. During public hours, the Discovery Center presents five different multi-media planetarium shows/day in its all-digital, 103-seat, 40' domed planetarium theater. The Discovery Center's observatory is open during school and public hours (weather-permitting) for views of the sun and night sky. Youth programs include school field trips with educational workshops and/or planetarium shows, afterschool STEM Clubs, summer STEM Day Camps with programs in rocketry, aviation, robotics, coding and space exploration, and a homeschool workshop series. Family activities include a monthly Friday night sky observation session and special astronomy workshops and presentations; special astronomy programs for military families; and an annual aerospace festival with a visiting NASA astronaut as keynote speaker and STEM activity stations hosted and staffed by New England aerospace and high tech companies, universities and science organizations for children and families set up throughout the Center. The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is a NH Space Grant affiliate institution, an Association of Science-Technology Centers Youth-Inspired Institution, and serves as NASA's Educator Resource Center for NH.
